DON’T FORGET
Throughout the year, the Board of Outreach invites you to offer additional support to a variety of organizations and ministries through monthly special offerings. This Sunday, April 19th a special offering will be received to support the Area 10 Mobile Food Pantry. This program seeks to provide nutritional assistance to homebound individuals by delivering supplemental groceries once a month. Their aim is to assist those in need with access to supplemental food and nutritional education so that they can better maintain an independent lifestyle. Nutrition Manger Suzanne Donnelly will join us during worship this Sunday to share more about their impactful work in our community. Please join us and consider offering your support to this meaningful work.
First United Scholarships
Thanks to the generosity of a couple church families, First United is able to offer scholarships to those who are graduating from high school and those pursuing higher education in certain fields. There is a general information form that all applicants need to fill out. It also gives information about the requirements for each scholarship. You can find it here. To apply for the Walling/Troxal Endowed Scholarship Fund, an additional form is required; it can be found here. All application materials are due this Sunday, April 19th (drop in the office or email to Lisa Stanger). For hard copies of these applications, please contact Lisa Stanger.
- Weigand Family Scholarship: The scholarship is to be used to support college tuition costs of graduating high school seniors at First United Church.
- Walling/Troxal Scholarship: The award requires a beginning or continuing undergraduate or graduate student be engaged in studies in education or a closely related field. Preference will be given to applicants who are studying the arts in connection with education; are members of First United; identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender; are the child of LGBT parents; or are a long-time supporter of/ally to LGBT people.
Mapping for Community Understanding Survey
As we continue our “Finding Focus” project supported by the Thriving Congregations grant, you are encouraged to complete a 7-question survey to explore not what we should focus on, but how we prefer to engage in that work. You’ll be asked to respond to a consistent set of statements using a response scale, from three different perspectives: 1) your personal preference, 2) your ideal preference for the congregation, and 3) your perception of how the congregation actually prefers to engage. These statements reflect a range of approaches along with other dimensions related to scale, visibility, and style of engagement. The results will be shared as visual maps showing how responses are distributed across these dimensions. These maps are meant to spark reflection and meaningful conversation. Focusing on “how we can do” helps build alignment and trust as we continue discerning “what we are called to do” together. Access the survey here. Paper surveys will be available at the Sanctuary entrances. Deadline for completion this Sunday, April 19th. Thank you for your continued participation in our “Finding Focus” Project!
Finding Focus: Exploring Justice Coffee Hour
As part of our “Finding Focus” project, our Thriving Congregations Grant Team encourages you to explore the differences between charity and justice, how they complement each other, and consider how we are invited to engage in both as a congregation. Join us in Fellowship Hall after worship for a special coffee hour this Sunday, April 19th, as together we watch a short video presentation (less than 10 minutes) featuring our own Rebecca Keith and Kim Yaussy Albright and engage in discussion around the ideas presented. Not able to attend on the 19th? Access the recording anytime here.
Ordination of Samuel Locke
The Southeast Association and Immanuel United Church of Christ are pleased to invite you to the Ordination Service for Samuel Martin Locke this Sunday, April 19th, at 3pm, at Immanuel United Church of Christ (402 Prospect Street, Indianapolis, IN). A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Those wishing to participate online may access the livestream via Immanuel UCC’s Facebook page here. An offering will be received during the service to support our Southeast Association Members in Discernment. Please contact Pastor Jessica if you are interested in carpooling.
NEW/UPDATED THIS WEEK
Happy Birthday!
Please remember in your prayers and give thanks for those who will be celebrating their birthdays in the week ahead: Luciano Lammers Lunghi (April 22) and Siri Loescher (April 25). We are blessed to have you in our lives!
Upcoming Board Meetings
The Board of Faith Formation (Megan Merrick, Chair) will meet via Zoom on Monday, April 20th, at 6pm. All meetings of Boards and Council are open to the wider congregation. Please be in touch with appropriate chairs if you are interested in attending.
Support LGBTQ+ Young People: Trinity Haven
Did you know that LGBTQ+ young people are much more likely to experience homelessness than their straight peers? Many of these young people are homeless because they have been rejected by their families on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Trinity Haven, an NGO in Indianapolis that provides temporary housing for LGBTQ+ people between 18 and 24 years old, is working with Trinity Episcopal Church to expand to Bloomington, with a focus on providing housing for students who need somewhere to live during school breaks when they cannot go home. The model relies on “host families” who volunteer to take in a young person for a set number of weeks or months. To host, all you need is a bedroom where the student can stay, someone over 25 to be the primary host, and a positive and affirming attitude toward LGBTQ+ people.
The first step to bringing this impactful service to Bloomington is to recruit hosts. If you think you might be able to help—by being a host or by spreading the word to recruit others to do so—please attend an informational meeting at the Bloomington Public Library, Downtown branch, Meeting Room 1B, this Monday, April 20th, 5-6pm. Invite anyone you know who might be interested to come along. All young people deserve a safe, supportive home to help them start their lives as adults — help us to show them that they are loved and valued! For more information, contact Susan Williams at shwillia1995@gmail.com. Trinity Haven has extensive experience with running this program successfully; they vet and train the host families and provide support both to the hosts and the students during the time they are together. For information about their work in Indy, please see their website here.
Quarryland Men’s Chorus Concert
It’s the final countdown! The 24th season of Quarryland Men’s Chorus is coming to an end, and they are adding another 525,600 minutes to their long history with a spring concert that is “By the Numbers!” You won’t have to walk 500 miles to enjoy it, as they are singing right here in our beautiful Sanctuary on Saturday, April 25th, at 7:30pm and again on Sunday, April 26th, at 3pm. Numerical songs abound, but Quarryland invites you to this curated musical experience where you’ll have a million reasons to laugh, cry, cheer, or just count your blessings. Time after time, the chorus sings for a measure of belonging, personal expression, and musical excellence in the LGBTQ+ community. You can count on QMC to make it worth your time! Tickets are $20/adult and $10/student, with 17 and under free. Tickets are available at the door, from members, or at their website quarryland.org.
Special Offerings: Thank you!
Because of your generosity offered through the March special offering, we raised $606 for One Great Hour of Sharing special mission. Thank you for supporting this impactful work in our wider community!

We’ll enjoy a time of informal, unprogrammed fun and fellowship in Fellowship Hall. As the name implies, pizza, drinks, and dessert will be provided. If you’re planning to attend, please let Pastor Jessica know by Wednesday, April 29th so she can be sure to have enough food for all and account for any dietary needs.
Celebrating Education
All are encouraged to join in celebrating the life-long journey of faith formation as we gather for worship on Sunday, May 3rd. We will recognize our graduating senior and scholarship recipient and show our appreciation for our awesome nursery care providers and CLT leaders as we recommit to our engagement in life-long learning and educating.
Send Off for Hyeyeon Ahn
It is with great appreciation and sadness that we send off our wonderful Organist, Hyeyeon Ahn, to her next musical venture. Hyeyeon will graduate from IU this May and continue her studies at Rice University. Her final Sunday with us will be May 3rd. Please join us for worship and a special coffee hour that day as we give thanks for her service this past year and wish her well as she embarks on this next phase of her journey. As Hyeyeon looks to her future, she also wants to express “how truly grateful I am for your kindness, support, and welcome during my time at First United Church. This was my first church in the United States, and I will always remember how warmly I was received here.” We offer our blessings and best wishes to you, Hyeyeon!
UPCOMING WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Join us for worship each Sunday morning at 10:30am. This Sunday’s service will feature Rev. Jessica Petersen-Mutai in the pulpit as we continue our study of the Gospel of Matthew. We will also celebrate the sacrament/ordinance of baptism as Lena Price takes a dip in our baptistry! Craig Dalrymple will present the day’s scripture and serve as our congregational lead. Ryan Block and Hyeyeon Ahn will lead us in song, and the First United Vocal Choir will offer special music. Dave Meyer and Du Huynh will offer a warm welcome to those who gather in the sanctuary. - Barb Clark
- Phyllis Perkins
- Frank Ivey (father of Sara Ivey Lucas)

The Hub Match Surpassed!
Throughout February and March, First United Church gathered contributions to support Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard (The Hub) in our effort to match the $10,000 pledged from the church endowment. Our goal was to contribute $20,000 total to the impactful work of the Hub, and we did it! YOU DID IT! Funds donated by our congregation and the wider community surpassed our goal totaling $10,690.62!
THANK YOU for your support through your financial contributions and inviting friends, family, and community members to contribute! You are invited to gather in Fellowship Hall following worship for a special coffee hour next Sunday, April 26th, hosted by Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard to celebrate this fabulous achievement.
Milk Money for Pathways
First United has launched Milk Money, a six‑month commitment (March-August) to support families at Pathways through their Nourish Together program. Our church has pledged to provide all of the milk Pathways families need during this time. Rather than donating milk directly, the Board of Community & Outreach invites members to give designated donations (cash or checks marked “Milk Money”); thanks to your generosity, we have already collected $380! Church volunteers will purchase and deliver the milk to ensure safe handling and consistent supply. Volunteers are also needed to help purchase and/or deliver milk; sign up here. If you have any questions or problems signing up, please contact Kristin Martindale (kmdale@iu.edu).
Task of the Month for Earth Care
All within our congregation are encouraged to participate in Earth Care Indiana’s task of the month, a tangible and manageable way you can get involved in caring for creation. Rebecca Keith will make periodic announcements and encourage participation at coffee hour. Check out this Task of the Month website to learn about the tasks that are scheduled. Even small things can make a difference!
People’s Market
First United houses the People’s Cooperative Market (PCM) in Fellowship Hall on Saturdays, 10am-2pm, offering fresh, locally grown produce through CSAs to be picked up or delivered. The full market is once again up and running; join them any Saturday! The PCM also operates the high tunnel greenhouse to the south of the church playground, which includes a community garden and produces food that is given out at no cost to members of our wider community seeking local, nutritious fresh food. You may reach out via email (peoplesmarketmanager@gmail.com) to learn more or to volunteer with the market.
The Joy of Hosting
Our Member Relations Committee continues to offer support to weekly coffee hour hosts and encourage everyone to sign up to host—it’s easy, fun, and a great way to serve your church family with a one-time commitment. Sign up as buddies or families, invite someone you’ve been wanting to get to know, use the occasion to showcase a family recipe or try out a new one. Sign up to host by clicking here.
EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS
Youth Connections
Youth in grades 6 and up are invited to gather with Pastor Jessica and one another in Roger Williams Hall following worship on Sunday, April 26th, 12-1pm to consider your questions, big and small, and explore faith matters as they are relevant to your life. Please contact Pastor Jessica with any questions.
Read the Synoptics in a Year: Gospel of Matthew
As we seek to live out our mission more fully, you are invited to explore the words and deeds of Jesus through studying the synoptic gospels (Mark, Matthew, and Luke) over the course of the year. Join us as we explore the Gospel of Matthew through daily readings (access suggested reading schedule here), a weekly Sunday morning discussion group (9:15-10am in Roger Williams Hall and via Zoom, click here), and weekly sermons during worship. Let us continue on the journey of following Jesus more faithfully and fruitfully in 2026!
Tuesday Morning Café and Discussion
Join us in Roger Williams Hall or via Zoom (click here) Tuesdays at 10:15am-11:30am as we gather for a time of informal conversation followed by thought-provoking theological study and discussion. We are currently engaging with a 24-session study on “Thinking about Religion and Violence” presented by Dr. Jason C. Bivins (who earned his PhD in Religious Studies from Indiana University!). In a world where violence in the name of religion can impact so many other people’s lives, it’s critical to understand the intersection between religion and violence. Join us as we embark on a global, multidisciplinary investigation of religious violence as we examine the roots of this phenomenon and are guided toward more informed ways of thinking about it. Learn more here. Previous participation and perfect attendance are not required.
Children’s Learning Time
Each Sunday morning, children in kindergarten and up will begin in the Sanctuary with their families and proceed to Room 2 with their adult leads for Children’s Learning Time (CLT) following Children’s Time. Many thanks to Jessica McIntosh and Brishna Arman for leading CLT this Sunday.
You are invited to consider whether you might be able to join our teaching rotation to enrich the program for the kids and gain so much from the experience yourself! Lesson materials and supplies are provided, and we have seasoned leaders to help get newer volunteers acclimated. If you are interested or have questions, please reach out to Megan Merrick, Pastor Jessica, or any member of the Board of Faith Formation.
Nursery Care
Our youngest children are welcome to spend time from 10-11:45am playing in the nursery or on the playground, weather permitting. Brishna Arman and Jesscia McIntosh will ensure our little ones are safe and engaged in fun activities during worship this Sunday. We are always looking for additional volunteer assistants to help in the nursery occasionally. Contact Jessica McIntosh if you are interested and with any questions.
