Monthly MCUM Food Donations

As we gather to celebrate world communion Sunday, why not bring something to share with people in our community as well. Looking for a way to improve someone’s life? Just look for the big red shelf in the lobby by the kitchen! First United collects food each month to support the Monroe County United Ministry’s food pantry, which feeds hungry Monroe County residents.  While all non-expired canned or boxed foods are appreciated, their ongoing food needs are:

Pasta

Pasta sauce

Mac & cheese

Tuna

Peanut butter

Crackers

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!  The Outreach Committee needs your input to determine priority area(s) for the upcoming year. What are you passionate about?  What would you like First United to tackle to really make some in-roads into solving?  Race/Racism…Criminal Justice/Immigration…Food Insecurity/Poverty…Climate Change/Environmental Resilience…LGBTQ?  Vote for your favorite by placing 3 stones into vases at the table along the garden/window wall of the sanctuary.  Once priority area(s) are chosen, Outreach will work to craft a year’s worth of various volunteer efforts, donations, education, conversation to further understanding, Minutes for Mission, and more to help bring this priority area to the forefront of the congregation’s mind and efforts. We want to make a definite difference!  Everyone, regardless of your age, please vote EVERY SUNDAY in October using 3 stones to let us know what area(s) you are passionate about. (Please vote with only 3 stones per Sunday. However, if you attend more than one Sunday in October, vote each time to attend.)   Questions? Ask Rebecca Nunley, Shazeeda Ameerally, Dave Myer, Cindy Stone, Cleve Wilhoit, or Catherine Gray (your Outreach Committee)

Baby Shower – Thank you!
Thank you to all who participated in the church baby shower initiative. Your enthusiasm and contributions are greatly appreciated. Contributions can still be designated and placed in the offering or sent to the church office. We look forward to sharing updates in the coming weeks!

Access Sunday Project: Accessible Playground Swings
Sunday, October 13 is designated by the UCC as Access Sunday – a time to celebrate the gifts of persons with disabilities, to recognize the strides the church has made in being more accessible, and to acknowledge that more work is needed.
This year we have set a goal of adding two accessible playground swings — one sized for those under 5 and one sized for those ages 5-12. We would need to raise around $800 in total. If you are interested in contributing to this special initiative, donations can be designated and placed in the church offering or sent to the church office. Any excess funds raised will be used to support other accessibility-related projects.

Picnic at Fowler Pumpkin Patch

The Board of Christian Education has reserved space at Fowler Pumpkin Patch on October 19th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm for fun and fellowship.  We will make s’mores over a campfire and have access to the farm and petting zoo.  Hayrides will be available for $5 a person, and free for children under three.  Feel free to bring a dish to share!  We can’t “cook out,” but can bring our own things to eat.  Food vendors may also be available.  The address is 4932 N. Greene County Line Rd, Bloomington, IN 47403.  All are welcome.  We hope you’ll join us!

Newcomer Event October 20 – We will piggyback a newcomer event onto our Third Sunday Potluck on Oct. 20.  Newcomers will go through the serving line first and adjourn to Room 6 for a time to get to know each other and church leadership, with a presentation made about First United Church by the Committee for Community Development.  We will wrap up our newcomer event at 1:15 p.m.  If you are new or relatively new, please plan to come.  To aid in our planning, please RSVP to:  info@firstuc.org  Do mention any dietary restrictions or needs for child care you may have.
