OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

Reception Contributions

The Board of Outreach will host a reception in Fellowship Hall after Candlelight Communion. Please join us in Fellowship Hall after Candlelight Communion for a reception of warm conversation and delectables. (Contributions of edibles both sweet and savory would be greatly appreciated and may be brought any time before 6:00 p.m. Offers of help to clean up in hall and in the kitchen will also be greatly appreciated.)

Reverse Advent

Outreach has an opportunity for you to celebrate Advent with an especially hopeful twist this year. Many of you are familiar with Advent calendars where you open a window each day for a treat of some kind. For Reverse Advent you give something each day.

Our theme for Reverse Advent is Cleaning and Personal hygiene Supplies. Each day (or most days, as fits for you) from the beginning of Advent, November 27, through Christmas Eve, you add a cleaning or personal hygiene item into a paper grocery bag (Verily, I saith unto thee, thy food pantries always needeth paper grocery bags, III Samuel 1:1). You are invited to bring your Reverse Advent bag to Christmas Eve service (or later, if necessary) to be delivered to the Monroe County United Ministries cleaning and personal hygiene closets.

We encourage you to shop at stores like Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Dollar General, and Aldi and notice how these stores, which people on limited incomes rely on, are different from stores you may shop at more often.

Cleaning and Personal hygiene Supplies can be items like household cleaning solution, window cleaning solution, dish soap, laundry detergent, sponges, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, baby soap, deodorant, toothpaste, shaving supplies, etc, etc, etc.

PS: if you like this observation of Advent, be sure to look for Epiphany.

ADVENT QUIET DAY – Opening the Door to Advent

It?s cacophonous out there! Do you long for a break?

You’re invited to open the door to some quiet and a rich experience of Advent; to gather with others to listen to the whispers of God, attend to hope, and find joy.

Come away for a day of prayer, silence, reflection, music, creating, walking the labyrinth and sharing discoveries.? The structure for the day will be a trellis to support you as much or as little as you need. There will be an opportunity to complete the Examen Through the Church Year, if you?d like. Copies of the Examen are available in the Sunday Bulletin, and at the Quiet Day.

Saturday, December 17, 2016 9:00a.m.-4:00p.m., Roger Williams Hall

Give yourself the gift of the whole day if you can, or come for as much as you are able. Invite a friend. Let us know if you think you?re coming – it doesn’t? obligate you but helps with planning. And if you forget and don?t get around to registering, come anyway, you?ll be very welcome!

Light breakfast items will be served from 9:00 to 9:30a.m. as we gather. A simple lunch will be served at noon. There is no charge for the day.

*Sign up online, in the Fellowship Hall lobby, email Dawna at spiritual.director.net@firstuc.org, or call the church office, 812-332-4439.
