Announcements for the week of July 29, 2018

Posted on July 27, 2018

PLAY FRIDAY. School is coming up fast and we’ll celebrate having finished the first few days with fun and games at Play Friday on August 10 from 5:30-8. Join us for the usual pizza dinner (served at 6), games galore and opportunities for free play outside and craft projects. Play Friday is a recurring event on the 2nd Friday or each month. It helps with food planning if you RSVP to Hopi Stosberg at hopi@stosberg.com or to the Facebook event. See you there!

NEWCOMERS MEAL AND INFORMATIONAL SESSION. On Thursday August 9, there will be a supper in Roger Williams Hall for newcomers to First United Church. It is hosted by the Committee on Community Development.  We will gather at 5:45 p.m., eat at 6:00 p.m. and be done before 7:30.  We mailed many invitations, but if this event is of interest to you and you didn’t get one, please join us.  We want you there!  RSVP to info@firstunited.org and note any food allergies/restrictions.

THE SPIRITUAL READING BOOK GROUP will meet on Saturday, August 4, from 11:00 to 12:30 p.m. in Roger Williams Hall. Moureen Coulter will lead the discussion of chapters nine and ten of Beyond Religion, by the Dalai Lama. All are invited! Please come and bring your questions.

USHERS NEEDED FOR AUGUST. We need several people to serve as ushers for the month of August. Ushers perform a very important role for our Sunday Church services in greeting our members and guests and answering their questions.
You do not need to be a member of the Church to serve as an usher. All you will need to do is to arrive early for Church service (about 10:20 AM).
To volunteer to serve as an usher, you can to do so by signing up on the August usher list, which is next to the kitchen door near the Fellowship Hall, or see Don Shelton, who is serving as usher captain for the month of August. You can email Don at dshelton0117@yahoo.com (or call him at 812/822-2749.)
Please consider volunteering for this very important service for the church.

POTTER’S POINTS:

Here are some things I want to draw your attention to:

  • The Church Council is considering a suggestion to change the time of the Sunday worship service.  Your input is important.  Please let me or Siri Loescher, Chair of the Board of Worship, know thoughts on the matter.
  • Please remember that the church is operating on a deficit budget this year for the first time in memory.  Regular giving tends to slow down during the summer months.  If you can help by giving a bit more to support the work of the church, I encourage you to do so.

Rob Potter, President of the Congregation

SUMMER SERIES OF SOCIAL AND SERVICE!
Do you love having fun?  Are you generally in church on Sundays?  Well, the Board of Christian Education would love to invite you to have fun in church during the next  Summer Series event!  In August, we will take advantage of the cooler afternoon temperatures and meet from 4-6, which will include dinner.  We hope to see you!  Please see any member of the Education Board with questions.

JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER. Purses, phones, and other valuables are easy targets for folks looking for something quick to take, even in church.  Please remember not to leave them unattended anywhere in the building.

NEEDED: COFFEE HOUR host(s) may volunteer by signing up on the pad in the Fellowship Hall Foyer. Treats are provided by the Board of Worship and Kitchen Committee, but special goodies, especially in celebration of a noteworthy occasion, are always appreciated but never an obligation. If you have never been a Coffee Hour host(s), please sign up and indicate whether you wish to be paired with an experienced kitchen helper.  Contact Malissa Sparks sparksmalissa@gmail.com with any questions.

HELPING TO BEAUTIFY THE GROUNDS.  Have an hour to work outdoors? Contact Laura Kao to find a task and arrange a time. Weeding, dead-heading flowers, trimming bushes, painting a rail. We  could work together. Laura_b_kao@hotmail.com

MONTHLY POTLUCKS.  Bring yourself and a dish for food and fellowship. Potlucks will be after service on the following dates: August 19, September 16, October 21, November 18, and December 16. To help ensure a diverse food offering at the potluck, let us know what type of dish you are bringing. There is a sign-up sheet on the table outside the kitchen. Questions? Contact Laura Kao laura_b_kao@hotmail.com or Hopi Stosberg hopi@stosberg.com

DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY THIS FALL

DISCIPLE is an exciting Bible study opportunity to explore the Bible and your faith while surrounded by, encouraged by, and challenged by others in the class. This class is not meant to offer answers but encourages you to develop and explore your own questions.

DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing bold Christian leaders. DISCIPLE draws on the work of scholars, personal Bible reading and study, and dynamic group discussion to aid in understanding the Bible and how it relates to live out your values. DISCIPLE will begin in September for 34 weeks with breaks and complete in May.
