Justice Forum on Gender

April 7 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

The Board of Christian Education will be hosting this year’s first Justice Forum (a rebrand of the former “Just Friday”) on Sunday, April 7th, from 4-6pm in the fellowship hall. Childcare from birth to age three will be available in the nursery. Other children and youth are welcome to join our discussion.

The topic will be gender identity, including concerns related to those who identify as transgender and non-binary. This will be an open discussion, moderated by Sara Ivey Lucas. The purpose of this forum is to learn from others while exploring our own areas of growth in these topics. What do we know, or think we know? What are our blind spots? Bring an open mind and a willingness to listen and learn.

Additionally, our discussion will address gender identity from a discernment perspective. The scripture that was taken down from the front of the sanctuary used the terms “brothers and sisters.” While the inclusion of “sisters” was a huge step forward in representing our congregation, these terms are still limiting to those who don’t fit neatly into either category. As we continue to contemplate what, if anything, we would like to put back up on the wall, come consider how we can broaden our representation to include those across the full spectrum of gender identity.

Do you feel that you have personal experiences that could add to this discussion? Contact a member of the board, or the board chair directly at dontylw@gmail.com, and we will make sure your voice is heard!
