SPIRITUAL DIRECTION. Sunday , Council will bring before the congregation a proposal to provide spiritual direction as a ministry of First United Church, and to enter into covenant with Dawna Petersen as spiritual director, serving individuals and groups both within our church community and within the community at large.
GIVING IT UP: SUSPICION AS SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE is the theme of this year’s Lenten services. We’ll gather at 6:30 p.m. in room 6 each Sunday during Lent (February 17-March 24) for a meal and a time of discussion. In our discussions we’ll focus on some of the most pertinent and trenchant critiques of religion, faith and God, and use those critiques as a jumping-off point for self-reflection aimed at helping us “give up” our unexamined assumptions and inadequate conceptions of God and faith in exchange for a deeper, more liberating understanding of them. Each week we will recruit volunteers to prepare a soup; others are invited to bring bread, salad or other accompaniments for a simple meal. For more information, see Joe Bartlett or Dawna Petersen.
HELP FEED OUR NEIGHBORS. First United has committed to sending four volunteers to the community kitchen the third Thursday of every month. Thursday, February 21, is the day this month. Volunteers are needed from 11:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. -6:30 p.m. Please consider giving your time to do this. You can sign up on the bulletin board outside the kitchen. I will be glad to remind you by phone or email, as listed in the online directory. If you have any questions please contact me, Cary Buzzelli at email@example.com or 339-4419.
PLEASE PICK UP YOUR OFFERING ENVELOPES. Many of you will find your name on a numbered box on a small table outside the sanctuary near the classrooms. If you do not have offering envelopes, you can take a box that doesn’t have a name on it. In this case, please write your name and the box number on the sheet provided.
FOOD FOR THE YOUTH GROUP. Our youth group is looking for food support for our Sunday meetings. We meet at noon and typically have a group of no more than ten youth and adults. If you are interested in contributing to our group meals, please go to our Takethemameal.com page by going to http://tinyurl.com/youthgroupfood. Or, visit the church website and use the last name “group” and password “youthgroup” to sign up for a meal. Either full meal preparation or even just snack support would be appreciated. Please keep in mind that a few of our youth are vegetarians.
IN OUR OWN WORDS. Have you ever wondered what goes into creating an original hymn text? Or have you ever wanted to try writing one yourself? An informal hymn writing circle is being formed at First United Church, allowing us the opportunity to express our unique brand of thought through the hymns we sing. We will discuss the structure of hymns and topics for new progressive texts, and we’ll create a place where we can bring the texts we are working on to share with others in a safe and encouraging environment. If you are even remotely interested or curious, please contact David Wood (firstname.lastname@example.org).
MINISTER OF CARE FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 17 IS MARGE FABER. A minister of care is a church volunteer who visits members in their homes. For more information, call the church office at 332-4439.
